Aradia sounds like an ancient goddess name you might have run into somewhere without quite placing it. But her story isn't ancient at all — it's a lot more recent, and a lot more rebellious.
In 1899, folklorist Charles Godfrey Leland published Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches, a text he claimed to have gathered from hereditary witches in Tuscany, part of the Italian Stregheria tradition. In it, Aradia is born from the union of Diana, goddess of the moon, and her brother Lucifer, god of the sun and light. Diana sends her to Earth to live among mortals and teach witchcraft to the poor and downtrodden — so they could break the chains imposed by feudal lords and the Catholic Church. Aradia became a founding figure of modern Wicca: the witches' messiah, a symbol of spiritual independence and anti-authoritarian resistance.
Here's the twist: the Charge of the Goddess — one of the most sacred texts still recited today in Wiccan rituals around the world — borrows passages almost word for word from that 1899 text about Aradia. So every time a modern witch speaks those words in a circle, she's repeating, often without knowing it, lines first attributed to Aradia over a century ago.
